The chance of becoming ill or having an accidental injury while on holiday is not always something a traveller thinks about when planning an overseas trip. They assume they are fit and healthy. However, no one can predict what will happen from one day to the next, especially when away from home. All Australians need to buy travel insurance before they take a trip, especially if they are going abroad.

Most Aussies have a fantastic time when they travel overseas. Few of them realize that each day of the year, the Australian consulate must deal with the tragic death, injury, or hospitalisation of their fellow Australians who are abroad. More than 20,000 separate cases are handled that include more than 700 hospitalisations, over 600 deaths, and over 100 evacuations of Australians who must be moved to another location for their medical needs. Most of these people do not have any form of travel insurance, and therefore they must deal with a personal tragedy, as well as a large bill they did not expect to have.

It can be very expensive for an Aussie in another country to stay in hospital or be medically evacuated. For example, in Southeast Asia, it is typical for just one day in hospital to be more than $800, and the return of someone's remains from Europe can cost more than $10,000. A medical evacuation from the United States can run anywhere from $75,000 to $95,000. Depending on where the patient's home is, and what needs to be done for the patient on the way, the cost can go up to $300,000. Areas of his shin bone had actually died, and the fractured ends were not healing. The Embassy helped them out by having the man medically evacuated to Australia for admission to hospital. All of this cost his family a considerable amount of money.

* Five Australians had a mini-van accident in Bali, and all were injured. The only thing that the Consulate had to do to assist them was to offer support and take care of the usual routine contact with next-of-kin. All of the Australians involved had travel insurance. The travel insurance company paid their medical bills in Bali and arranged for their medical evacuation back home to Australia.

* A young Australian had been working in an American ski resort for about four months. He then left the resort to travel around and see the USA. He knowingly let his travel insurance policy that he had taken out for a 12 month period expire just a few days before he was to leave to go back home. He somehow managed to get hit by a car while crossing a road. The young man had serious head injuries, and was unconscious when placed in intensive care. He had to have quite a bit of specialized care until he was able to be flown back to Australia. He had not regained consciousness and went home on a stretcher. It cost his family $80,000 just for the medical evacuation. They were forced to get a second mortgage on their home in order to get this much money.

* A young man from Australia went to the United States for an amateur surfing competition. He was an experienced surfer, but misjudged a wave during a practice session. The wave tossed him onto a reef and he was seriously injured. He was airlifted to a local hospital, when he immediately had two major operations. The young Aussie's hospital bill came to $290,000. It was a stroke of good fortune that the young man's parents had insisted he purchase travel insurance before he left Australia. The insurance company covered the huge bill, and his family were able to spend time helping the young man with recovery instead of worrying about how to pay the hospital bill.

Does Your Travel Insurance Cover Hazardous Activities?

As travel insurance companies continue to get more and more competitive, some policies are starting to offer inclusive cover of hazardous activities as standard. Whilst it is always worth double checking the fine print to be sure that the specific activities you might be trying are covered, I thought I would combine a selection of extreme sports and leisure, that once may have seemed for adrenaline junkies only, but are now becoming as much an obligatory part of a holiday as a novelty keychain.

White water rafting is a key example of a sport that contains many inherent risks by nature, but has enjoyed massive growth in support since its birth. Despite the fact that rafts are essentially one of man's oldest forms of transportation, white water rafting as a recreational sport has only really been around since its inclusion in the Munich Olympic Games in 1972. Today, entire families (supervised of course) can pile into a rubber boat and set off down the Colorado River for kicks.

Interestingly, whilst abseiling has now been considered safe enough to be covered inclusively on some insurance policies, I have yet to see rock climbing included too. This seems strange, not only due to the marginally similar degree of risk from hanging around on a cliff face by a rope - I suppose it must be a case of statistics and the greater percentage of folks climbing up rocks compared to the smaller number of those climbing back down again.

Snowboarding was born in the 1970s, but only became regarded as a sport worthy of Olympic status in 1998. Subsequently, it is expected that anybody going on a winter holiday today will have a go at the sport without a second thought; which is very impressive for a sport that bears so many similarities to skateboarding (which, incidentally, is also becoming included in insurance policies as standard). It seems that it may well be the popularity of snowboarding that is the biggest incentive for insurance companies to include it, as in 2008 5.1 million took part in the sport.

Water skiing has long been a holiday activity that some have not considered as hazardous enough to check whether it is covered by their insurance. Also, it has been one of those sports that people don't realize they want to do it until they have reached their destination and no longer thinking about insurance at all. It would seem lucky, and considerate on the part of the insurance companies, that it is now becoming covered inclusively as standard.

The Annual Deductible of a PPO Health Insurance Policy

Every PPO Plan has an annual deductible, but few people understand exactly how it works.

The annual deductible is one of the basic details of a PPO policy and you may even know what the dollar amount of the annual deductible of your policy is. But, often the language used to outline the policy coverages is wordy and confusing and the majority of people are taken by surprise when they have to pay more for their health care costs than they first thought.

So, just what is the Annual Deductible?

The annual deductible of a policy is the amount you must pay each plan year before the insurance company will help you pay for your health care costs.

There can be an exception to this rule with some policies. There types of policies have a set co-pay amount for specific services and these co-pay amounts are lower than you would pay without the coverage. Understand though that these co-pays do not count towards your annual deductible. The most common services that this applies to are office visits, generic drugs and preventative care.

An Example of How the Annual Deductible Works:

If your annual deductible is $1,000, you would be responsible for paying for $1,000 worth of health care expenses (excluding co-pays as mentioned above) for the year. After you have paid that $1,000 the insurance company would contribute to your costs as outlined by your policy. With most PPO plans, this usually means that you will be responsible for a percentage of the fee negotiated by the insurance company with the service provider and the insurance company will pay the balance. Note that most policies include a capped annual out of pocket maximum.

There are two basic types of annual deductibles, individual and family. Individual deductibles apply separately to each covered person. With an individual deductible, each member must meet the annual deductible before the insurance company contributes to the costs of that individual.

Family deductibles apply to all covered members of a family. Depending on the guidelines, meeting the deductible can be shared by two or more family members.

This leads us to one of the most common family deductible formats, the two member max.

The Two Member Max Clause:

If you have a policy that covers more than one person, your policy may have a footnote on the annual deductible that says "2 member max". This means that two of the people covered on the policy must each meet the deductible before the insurance company will help pay for your health care costs.

If just one person meets the deductible, the insurance company will contribute to that person's health care costs. Note that this person's future expenses do not count towards any other member's deductible. The second person must meet their own deductible before the insurance company will contribute to their health care expenses.

If there are more than two people covered under the policy, once two of the members have reached the deductible, the insurance company will contribute to all members' health care costs.
