He knowingly let his travel insurance policy that he had taken out for a 12 month period expire just a few days before he was to leave to go back home. He somehow managed to get hit by a car while crossing a road. The young man had serious head injuries, and was unconscious when placed in intensive care. He had to have quite a bit of specialized care until he was able to be flown back to Australia. He had not regained consciousness and went home on a stretcher. It cost his family $80,000 just for the medical evacuation. They were forced to get a second mortgage on their home in order to get this much money.

* A young man from Australia went to the United States for an amateur surfing competition. He was an experienced surfer, but misjudged a wave during a practice session. The wave tossed him onto a reef and he was seriously injured. He was airlifted to a local hospital, when he immediately had two major operations. The young Aussie's hospital bill came to $290,000. It was a stroke of good fortune that the young man's parents had insisted he purchase travel insurance before he left Australia. The insurance company covered the huge bill, and his family were able to spend time helping the young man with recovery instead of worrying about how to pay the hospital bill.

As travel insurance companies continue to get more and more competitive, some policies are starting to offer inclusive cover of hazardous activities as standard. Whilst it is always worth double checking the fine print to be sure that the specific activities you might be trying are covered, I thought I would combine a selection of extreme sports and leisure, that once may have seemed for adrenaline junkies only, but are now becoming as much an obligatory part of a holiday as a novelty keychain.

White water rafting is a key example of a sport that contains many inherent risks by nature, but has enjoyed massive growth in support since its birth. Subsequently, it is expected that anybody going on a winter holiday today will have a go at the sport without a second thought; which is very impressive for a sport that bears so many similarities to skateboarding (which, incidentally, is also becoming included in insurance policies as standard). It seems that it may well be the popularity of snowboarding that is the biggest incentive for insurance companies to include it, as in 2008 5.1 million took part in the sport.

Water skiing has long been a holiday activity that some have not considered as hazardous enough to check whether it is covered by their insurance. Also, it has been one of those sports that people don't realize they want to do it until they have reached their destination and no longer thinking about insurance at all. The Annual Deductible of a PPO Health Insurance Policy

Every PPO Plan has an annual deductible, but few people understand exactly how it works.

The annual deductible is one of the basic details of a PPO policy and you may even know what the dollar amount of the annual deductible of your policy is. But, often the language used to outline the policy coverages is wordy and confusing and the majority of people are taken by surprise when they have to pay more for their health care costs than they first thought.

So, just what is the Annual Deductible?

The annual deductible of a policy is the amount you must pay each plan year before the insurance company will help you pay for your health care costs.

There can be an exception to this rule with some policies. There types of policies have a set co-pay amount for specific services and these co-pay amounts are lower than you would pay without the coverage. Understand though that these co-pays do not count towards your annual deductible. The most common services that this applies to are office visits, generic drugs and preventative care.

An Example of How the Annual Deductible Works:

If your annual deductible is $1,000, you would be responsible for paying for $1,000 worth of health care expenses (excluding co-pays as mentioned above) for the year. After you have paid that $1,000 the insurance company would contribute to your costs as outlined by your policy. With most PPO plans, this usually means that you will be responsible for a percentage of the fee negotiated by the insurance company with the service provider and the insurance company will pay the balance. Note that most policies include a capped annual out of pocket maximum.

There are two basic types of annual deductibles, individual and family. Individual deductibles apply separately to each covered person. With an individual deductible, each member must meet the annual deductible before the insurance company contributes to the costs of that individual.

Family deductibles apply to all covered members of a family. Depending on the guidelines, meeting the deductible can be shared by two or more family members.

This leads us to one of the most common family deductible formats, the two member max.

The Two Member Max Clause:

If you have a policy that covers more than one person, your policy may have a footnote on the annual deductible that says "2 member max". This means that two of the people covered on the policy must each meet the deductible before the insurance company will help pay for your health care costs.

If just one person meets the deductible, the insurance company will contribute to that person's health care costs. Note that this person's future expenses do not count towards any other member's deductible. The second person must meet their own deductible before the insurance company will contribute to their health care expenses.

If there are more than two people covered under the policy, once two of the members have reached the deductible, the insurance company will contribute to all members' health care costs.

13 Funny Travel Insurance Stories - Lucky For Some, Less So For Others!

Cheap travel insurance has a reputation of being quite a dull area to work in. While it does have its dull routine moments, just like any other job, these are made up for by the occasional inspired funny travel insurance stories you hear. It's hard to say how many of them are either exaggerated, hugely embellished or just plain made up, but I still found a few of these travel insurance stories made me laugh while I was researching this article, and that's good enough for me.

Here's 13 funny travel insurance stories. While 13 is traditionally an unlucky number, a fair few on this list will consider themselves very lucky to be covered by understanding travel insurance companies! The remaining ones who were turned down will no doubt have learned an invaluable life lesson!


Cheeky Monkeys Cause Havoc

According to this tale (tail?), a group of cheeky monkeys conspired to ruin a couple's romantic trip to Malaysia. Due to the heat, the couple left the window of their chalet open during the day while they went out, but regretted their decision when they returned to discover their clothes and belongings all over the surrounding resort and neighbouring rainforest. The couple's insurance company were thankfully understanding and ensured they did not need to keep re-wearing the same clothes for the remainder of their trip!


A LOT of Bombay Mix

You know Bombay Mix? The spicy Indian snack food. One traveller claimed to have lost £600 worth of the stuff on his way back from holiday, and tried to claim on his travel insurance. With Bombay Mix costing less than £1 per 250g bag, a conservative estimate is that the man would need to be carrying over 80 kilograms of the snack to have racked up £600 expenses! Quite hard to misplace, you'd have thought, and the travel insurance company agreed, refusing to pay the claim.


A sting in the tail

One traveller lost his wallet down a drain, while exploring Natanya in Israel. However, rather than filing a police report and contacting his travel insurance providers, the brave individual tried to fish his wallet out of the drain - only to be stung by a poisonous scorpion which had made the area its home! The man's treatment (and presumably his missing wallet) was covered by his travel insurance.


Geronimo!

Winning the dubious honour of the most unlucky on the list, this family's camping trip went awry when a parachutist from the nearby airbase missed his target and landed squarely on the family tent. The camping equipment was ruined, and to add insult to injury, they were not covered for accidental damage so had to foot the bill themselves.


The joke's on the burglar?

A fairly routine claim for a stolen cosmetics bag took an amusing twist when it was revealed that the victim had transferred her medical-strength haemorrhoid cream into an empty moisturiser tub earlier in the holiday. While French police remained on the lookout for a suspiciously smooth-faced thief, the woman's travel insurance company paid up for the missing make-up, perfume and lotions.


Wrong airport, wrong country!

A man who claimed for a holiday cancellation when he was refused entry to a flight was turned down, when it emerged his flight wasn't from Manchester in the North West of England, but Manchester, New Hampshire in the United States.


Some claims just aren't worth the excess!

Here's a tip for you - if you have an excess you need to pay on a claim of £50, make sure your stolen possessions are worth at the very least £50.01! One traveller who had his bag snatched on holiday had his claim turned down, when it was established the complete inventory of contents was: 1x bottle of water, 1 x newspaper and 1 x packet of mints. No wonder his cheap travel insurance claim was rejected.


Criminals aren't the only animals to ruin your trip

If you're holidaying in the Black Forest, you may want to make sure you lock up properly when you leave the house. One family came back to their chalet to discover their home had been invaded by one hungry goat, which had proceeded to much his way through their wallets, passports and sandwiches. Their claim for new passports and wallets were rejected on the grounds of negligence in leaving the chalet wide open.


Coconut Shy

If you're planning on relaxing under a tree in Sri Lanka, it's worth checking your spot carefully, as one traveller found after being concussed by a falling coconut. The injury knocked her out, which may sound unlikely until you consider that the average fresh coconut weights 2 kilograms, and their trees grow up to 30 metres high. A coconut travelling at 53 miles per hour is no joke, and it's unsurprising that the traveller was reimbursed the £400 medical bills.


Coconuts lost

On the other hand, others apparently cannot function without their coconuts: a couple returned from Mauritius to discover their local produce missing. Claiming for two lost coconuts may seem like a reasonable idea on paper, but with each one costing less than a pound to replace, and an initial excess on any claim made of £50, it's no wonder the travel insurance providers turned this one down.


A what!?

Occasionally you hear of a claim for something that's just completely baffling, and it was as such for Direct Line, who allegedly received a claim for a "guitar made out of a pumpkin".


A burning desire for a drink

At the ironically labelled 'Fire Bar' in Greece, one reveller paid the price for 'needing a drink' when she remained at the bar waiting to be served despite a loud buzzer and the rapid departure of others clamouring for a pint. Unsurprisingly, the buzzer turned out to be a fire alarm - a fact which she finally appreciated when the flames engulfed the area. She escaped the scene with third degree burns and £300 of medical expenses to pay - which her travel insurance company covered.


Someone's fibbing!

Finally more of a fact than a funny travel insurance story, but its believed that there have been more claims for stolen £1000 Rolex Oysters watches than have been manufactured. It seems some people have been creative with their travel insurance claims...

Everyday we get cross-sold and u-sold

Are you making the most of every up-sell and cross-sell opportunity to help you and your company navigate through these turbulent times?

The sixth member of our household, our dog Brody, was officially told off yesterday by a horse-rider who was spooked by Brody's barking and sudden appearance at the gate.

The poor rider came off the saddle and was thankfully unhurt. Time for a "Beware of the Dog" sign in case of further incidents, at least then we're warning of the potential danger.

Now Brody is a loveable beast but at almost a metre high on her hind legs, can be quite menacing to any person entering the premises. That evening I searched the internet for a suitable sign and came across a great company specialising in house signs of all designs, shapes and sizes.

I chose a classic "Beware of the Dog" sign and popped this in my shopping cart. Happy with my purchase and eager to get the job done so I could watch the rugby on the TV, although being an English supporter I wish I hadn't bothered.

Up popped a message "Buy another sign and get a £5 discount". I thought why not that's a good deal so I had a look at a similar sign which read "Beware of the Children" which I thought was hilarious.

About to click the "buy now" button and up popped another message. "For an additional £2.99 you can have this sign is polished brass". Mmm I thought that would look nice at the front gate.

It happens all the time. I'd been up-sold, then I'd been casually cross-sold. And I loved every minute of it as I hadn't the first idea about house signs - I'd never bought one in my life so I welcomed the advice they gave me.

Everyday we're bombarded with up-selling and cross-selling. Today it happened to me 3 more times

In Asda, I was wafted with a fresh baked bread smell as I walked past the bakers section. I picked up a fresh loaf. I'm sure they ooze smells into the atmosphere to boost the pungency. Clever supermarkets.

At Amazon, I was told that people who bought this book just like me, also bought this book and if you buy the two together, you can save £2.99. Bargain.

Even when I took my free membership of the Youth Hostel Association this morning on the phone, the guy encouraged me to process a Gift Aid application. Just so if I was to renew my membership next year, I'd get some valuable reliefs. Not only a brilliant up-sell but a great trial close as well. Top man.

How come up-selling and cross-selling works

Built into all human DNA is the need to make careful decisions and when we buy things, we are wary of making the right verdict. Some people take a long time to decide and weigh the options carefully first. And that's a good thing too.

I talk about a negotiation tactic called Nibbling, which involves getting to a final agreement on the negotiation, shaking hands and walking out the door...but just before you leave you ask for one further concession. Because the deal has been done, decisions made, people breathe a sigh of relief and will easily give into one more demand. It works too.

The same theory works when we cross-sell and up-sell. The big decision has been made. In other words, they like your company, you and the product and they want to buy so adding something else is not a huge extra decision to make.

After all, our job as salespeople, is to serve the customer. It comes from the Norwegian word Selje - to serve - so we should be proud to serve them. We know about our products and services and should be able to share our expertise with our customers.

By the way, everyone within an organisation who comes into contact with customers is a salesperson during turbulent times. That's a fact and one weapon to help you navigate through these turbulent times and keep your job at the same time.

What stops us cross-selling and up-selling?

Our mindset that's what prevents us. For years I've been observing customer service people, sales people and the one thing that prevents them cross-selling and up-selling is this fear that the customer might say no. This is highly understandable.

This is why websites are excellent at cross-selling and up-selling. A website doesn't have feelings you see.

A really effective way of getting around this mindset is to use affirmations. Write on separate pieces of card the following positive statements:


Serving customers is good and healthy
Customers want to hear about our products and services
Customers want my expertise
Customers are allowed to say no and that's OK by me
Place these cards somewhere where you can see them easily and look at them once every day for 21 days. 21 days is when habits form and mindsets change. Go on give it a go. It works.

Its 3 weeks later and I want to cross-sell and up-sell but what's the difference?

Not a lot really as it doesn't really matter but for the detailed people out there here's the difference.

Cross-selling is where you suggest additional products that complement the one the customer wants to buy, so my extra sign for a £5 discount is a cross-sell. Another example is where your customer is busy saving for their annual holiday using a monthly savings account and you suggest travel insurance. One complements the other.

Up-selling is fun. This is where you have a really good knowledge of your product or service and you suggest an upgrade to make the product better. Getting my sign in polished brass was an up-sell.

Another example happened to me the other day. Renewing my Private Medical Insurance with BUPA, the clever person on the phone suggest I upgrade to the better product because it covered up to 20 of the new fangled cancer drugs which I'd heard about in the press. Now, if anything dreadful happened to you Mr Archer, you would want access to these wouldn't you. Sucker punched me that did and a cute little "yes tag" at the end. I must say I was most impressed with BUPA on the phone - proud that their product is at the most expensive end of the market. Good training I imagine.

Ok I understand the difference but how do I do it?

This part needs a little bit of preparation. Firstly up-selling

You've simply got to know your product or service really well and especially what it can do for your customer. Think of their WIIFM - what's in it for me - so you can match each feature to a particular benefit for your customer. Then simply suggest the upgrade with a good reason why this would benefit them and wait for their reaction. Remember customers are allowed to say no and that's OK.

If you want to get clever you could ask them a question or two to find out a little more about their needs. McDonalds don't do this when they ask if you want to Supersize that burger purely because the drive-thru is not the best time to ask questions. But imagine if they asked "How hungry are you feeling today?" "Ravenous" you reply. "Wow so you'd like to supersize that wouldn't you?"

Now that would be smart.

Make a list of all the features of your product or service. Next to this list jot down the benefits to customers of adding these features, practise these links in front of the mirror so you can describe them clearly and just ask the next customer. Remember to go quiet after you've asked. And remember its OK for them to say no.

Next some cross selling ideas for you

Cross-selling requires a little bit more preparation which you can do on a large piece of paper and this is a really cool thing to do.

The trick to cross-selling is to know how each of your products link together, how they complement each other and the words you can use to create this association.

Take your large piece of paper and draw a grid

Each letter represents a product or service you have available. Go to product A first in the vertical column. Run along to the empty box where A meets B and write in this box how product B complements product A. For example if product A was a mortgage loan and product B was a life assurance plan you could write down links such as:


"Pays off your loan in the event of your untimely death"
"Helps you sleep at night knowing that your family can live in the home if you died without the mortgage hanging over their head"
"Costs very little to ensure your mortgage is repaid on your early death"

Then move onto where A meets C. Product C could be Permanent Health Insurance. Here your associations could be:


"Which makes sure you can keep up your monthly mortgage payments if you're off work for a long period through illness."
"Ideal to protect your mortgage payments which will stop you being re-possessed"

Go through the whole grid system and write down all the associations. Some won't link together and that's quite normal but most can and will. Practise the words you want to use. Say them confidently and enthusiastically and you'll be surprised how many customers will say yes. And remember they are allowed to say no - that's OK.

In most circumstances you have the opportunity to ask a few questions to find out the customer's needs before you launch into your link statements. However, we've found people who are new to cross-selling should do small things first, get confident and achieve some success, then move onto asking questions afterwards.

What are your next steps?


Sort out your beliefs when it comes to cross-selling. Set up some affirmations on card and look at them everyday for 21 days.
Familiarise yourself with the features of each product and the benefits customers have adding each feature.
Draw your product matrix on a large piece of paper and stick to your wall somewhere so you can glance at it when you want to.
Then just ask your customers to take the additional product or to upgrade what they've already purchased in their minds.
And remember customers are allowed to say no.

Just don't bug them continuously if they do say "no". Our job is to serve them and if they don't want it, then we should accept this as others will want to buy the additional feature or extra product.

And did I buy the "Beware of the Children" sign? No, Claire wouldn't let me, she thought it gave the wrong signal about our kids - shame that as you did get a £5 discount if you bought two together and for £2.99 extra that polished brass would look nice on the wall...and there was the free delivery...

Successful "listening" in job interviews leads to offers. In order to evaluate such offers and to negotiate intelligently for adequate compensation, you should have certain basic information, which the interviewer may not offer voluntarily. A final decision to accept or reject a position maybe - or should be - influenced by the answers to some of the following questions

What are the specifications for this position? What are the specific duties and responsibilities? What is the extent of authority? Can the position description be altered? Upgraded?

How long has the position been in existence? Open? Who had the position until now? Why is he / she being replaced? How long was he / she in the it? Did he / she succeed? What led to his / her success / failure? How many predecessors were there? What happened to them? Why? How would you describe the ideal candidate for the position?

Who are the people with whom I will work? Who is my immediate supervisor? My staff? My associates in related departments? What is the title, history in the company, previous background, education, age, personality, and reputation of each?

Does the company have any long range plans for this department? Growth or consolidation? Does the department have its own budget? Who controls it? Has the department been successful? What is its reputation in the company? (In the opinion of the interviewer), is there sufficient staff to handle the workload? How is the morale of the staff? Is there anyone on the staff who expected to be promoted to this position but was by-passed?

Where does this position fit into the company's organizational plan? Are the reporting channels clear? Is there more than one "boss"?

Does the company have an induction programme for new employees? How do I become familiar with company policies, practices and "etiquette?" Does the company have an Executive Development Programme? Other training programmes? What are its facilities? What resource does it utilize? Does the company sponsor courses at universities? At management associations or industry conferences? Are suggestions welcome?

How long has the company been in existence? What is its corporate culture? Its mission? Does it have a strategic plan? Who owns it? Is it family dominated? How long has its present management been in control? What has been its gross sales and profit (or loss) pattern during the last ten years? Five years? Two years? Now? Does the company have a growth plan? (See annual report) What do the company's annual report and the D&B report show about its credit rating and financial history? If the company is 'public', what do recent stockbrokers' reports say about its management and its prospects|? How does the company and its products rate in its industry? What is the economic trend of the industry?

Where can I get information on housing, cost of living, religious and social organizations, shopping, schools, libraries, educational and recreational facilities? Does the company encourage employees to participate in community activities? Does the company dominate the community?

(While negotiating 'basic' salary or compensation): Does the company offer stock options or deferred payment plans? Bonus arrangements? What is the 'executive package at top levels? Does the company have an Employee Benefits Plan (medical insurance, retirement)? Does the company reimburse moving expenses? Losses incurred in selling one's house? Living and travel expenses while the employee is commuting and finding permanent housing for his / her family? Does the company arrange employment contracts? What is the company's policy regarding vacations and sick leave? When and how is salary usually paid? What is the company's policy regarding employment agency's fees? Does the company have a periodic employee appraisal or performance review? What are the prospects for salary increases? Promotion? Will there be opportunities for greater responsibility and broader experience?

What is expected to be accomplished during the first rating period? How is the position evaluated? At what frequency? How are performance and raises tied to performance criteria? What is the current salary range for the position?

Many of these questions are of a sensitive nature. An improper attitude or approach could antagonize your interviewers and make them think you are overly suspicious, too careful, or prying. The following suggestions will help you minimize the risk of offending your interviewers.

- Avoid self-serving questions that would tend to screen you out...be company-orientated in your thinking.
- Be positive in your approach.
- Remember you are not an 'inquisitor'.
- Plan the wording of the questions you want to ask.
- Maintain a friendly, open attitude.
